January 2013: “Contain Yourself!” at Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science

Try to “Contain Yourself!” at Second Saturday Science on Saturday, January 12th

Elizabeth City, NC — Come dig in the dirt with Robert Pinkerton, an Elizabeth City Master Gardener, and learn all about container gardening during “Contain Yourself!” at Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science program, on Saturday, January 12, at 11:00 am. Kids will get to bring home a small “garden” container of their own!

“Contain Yourself!” is a part of Port Discover's Kinetic Kids programs made possible by Albemarle Hospital Foundation, in collaboration with Vidant Health, through their regional Community Benefit Grants Program. Second Saturday Science is free. Port Discover is located at 611 East Main Street in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The science center’s hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups. A hands-on science museum for the kid in all of us, Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

December 2012: “Healthy Sweets for the Holidays” at Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science

Enjoy some “Healthy Sweets for the Holidays” at Second Saturday Science on Saturday, December 8th

Elizabeth City, NC — Join Port Discover to learn about healthy choices--even when it comes to feeding your sweet tooth for the Holidays--during “Healthy Sweets for the Holidays,” at Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science program, on Saturday, December 8, at 11:00 am. Kids will enjoy getting to mix a little sweet with a whole lot of science!

November 2012: “Whole Grains, Whole Foods, Whole-Yeah!” at Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science

Get into “Whole Grains, Whole Foods, Whole-Yeah!” at Second Saturday Science on Saturday, November 10th

Elizabeth City, NC — Learn to eat right while having fun with Andy Montero, Head Chef and owner of Montero’s Restaurant, during “Whole Grains, Whole Foods, Whole-Yeah!,” at Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science program, on Saturday, November 10, at 11:00 am. Andy will be teaching us the “Whole Truth” about some of our favorite dishes. This class will be fun for both your body and mind!

September 2012: “What a Good Body Needs!” at Port Discover’s Afterschool Science

Port Discover’s Afterschool Science presents
“What a Good Body Needs!” on September 20

Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover’s Afterschool Science is back! Join Marathon runner and boxing coaches, Coach Dad and Coach Ray, from Elizabeth City Boxing Club during “What a Good Body Needs!,” at Port Discover’s Afterschool Science, Thursday, September 20, at 3:00 pm. Kids will have fun learning how to prepare for a big race while improving their jump roping skills.

“What a Good Body Needs!” is a part of Port Discover's Kinetic Kids programs made possible by a grant from Albemarle Hospital Foundation in collaboration with Vidant Health. Afterschool Science is Port Discover’s free, interactive science program featuring a different and timely topic each month. Afterschool Science is made possible thanks to the City of Elizabeth City.
