“What a Good Body Needs!” on September 20
Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover’s Afterschool Science is back! Join Marathon runner and boxing coaches, Coach Dad and Coach Ray, from Elizabeth City Boxing Club during “What a Good Body Needs!,” at Port Discover’s Afterschool Science, Thursday, September 20, at 3:00 pm. Kids will have fun learning how to prepare for a big race while improving their jump roping skills.

“What a Good Body Needs!” is a part of Port Discover's Kinetic Kids programs made possible by a grant from Albemarle Hospital Foundation in collaboration with Vidant Health. Afterschool Science is Port Discover’s free, interactive science program featuring a different and timely topic each month. Afterschool Science is made possible thanks to the City of Elizabeth City.

Port Discover is located at 611 East Main Street in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The science center’s hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of The Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

March 2012: Port Discover Kicks-Off the Worth the Walk Community Walking Project

Walk Around the World with Port Discover because You’re Worth the Walk
Port Discover Kicks-Off the Worth the Walk Community Walking Project During March 2 First Friday Artwalk
Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover invites the community to Walk Around the World as part of the Worth the Walk Community Walking Project, launching Friday, March 2, during the First Friday ArtWalk. Port Discover will provide updates on the cumulative distance that the community walks—across North Carolina, across the United States, and eventually heading across the entire world. An on-line program is available for everyone to track their steps and can be accessed at the Worth the Walk link at www.portdiscover.org. To track steps, Port Discover pedometers are available at The Science Shop.

To encourage children and adults to get walking, a series of interest-based on-line walking tours of downtown Elizabeth City can be accessed at www.portdiscover.org. Printed walking maps will be available in April.

Individuals as well as groups can participate. Businesses, schools, families, sports groups, and church groups are encouraged to join as teams. To register your business, contact robin@portdiscover.org.

A Worth the Walk Community Walk is set for Saturday, May 12, beginning at 11:00 am. The walk with culminate in a free group Zumba class during the Waterfront Market.

Albemarle Hospital Foundation, in collaboration with Vidant Health, supports Port Discover’s Worth the Walk community walking project, through their regional Community Benefits Grants Program.
